While coin prices can vary greatly based on their value, coin collector prices are different than any other number given to a coin on the market. Coin collectors sometimes view their collection with the “blinders on” and tend to only see the good and not the bad of their collection, and all their coins must be worth more than what everyone else thinks. While on occasion this may hold more truth than optimism, majority of the time a coin collectors price far exceeds what the market is willing to pay for it.
While some may believe that the price a coin can be bought or sold for is the only price that exists for coins, each and every collector has their own coin collector price for every coin in their collection. Coin collecting has two sets of prices, the red book which is only an estimate of what a coin could possibly bring and the market value which is what the coin could actually be sold for. A coin collector’s price is a skewed combination of the two. The price may have first been based on facts, but as a wide array of opinions have crept in during the process which turns the price into something that is quite unrealistic. They may believe their coin is of better quality and either does or does not have a defect which makes it worth even more, a case of beauty in the eye of the beholder. They want to believe their coin is worth as much if not more than they paid for it and that there would be group of desperate collectors willing to pay them any price for it if they ever decided to sell. They may choose to be oblivious to an obvious flaw on the coin that makes it worth less with the belief that it’s not really noticeable and that it shouldn’t affect the coins value.
Coin collector prices should never be taken at face value as it is hardly ever the true value of a coin. Be wary of collector’s who try and tell you’re their price is the market value. Do your own price research, and have it appraised by a professional to make sure you are getting your monies worth. This will guarantee you pay a realistic price and not the coin collector prices a collector can only dream of getting.
