The mere mention of the term “billiard or pool hall” reminds one of the famous movies, “The Hustler” starring Paul Newman and “The Color of Money,” starring Paul Newman and Tom Cruise, since most of the action in these movies happened in billiard halls. It also brings to mind the image of smoke filled rooms packed with billiard tables and bright lights hanging over them. A billiard hall is a place where many tables are placed under bright, billiard lighting allowing players to play pool, snooker or billiard. Billiard halls may also operate in conjunction with bowling alleys and casinos. Players typically enjoy a beer or drink while playing the game and that is the reason why billiard halls are also known as billiard parlors and billiard saloons.
Prior to 1960, billiard halls were perceived as places of antisocial activities. These were the places that were more like pubs, where alcohol was imbibed freely and the game encouraged gambling among players and spectators as well. There were even laws passed restricting the entry of minors into billiard halls. But slowly this perception changed and billiards is now regarded as a game that requires considerable skill.
Billiard halls may charge customers up to $15 per hour for the use of a billiard table. Rates of course vary depending on the location and the city. Many a billiard hall also offers classes for billiard enthusiasts who want to learn the nuances of the game. As well, many billiard world champions literally grew up in billiard halls, observing the players frequenting the hall and perfecting on their styles and techniques.
A billiard hall business could potentially make good returns, especially if it is located in just the right place. One can start by putting up a single billiard table, with provisions for more if the business thrives. On weekdays, many pool and billiard halls are open from 11 a.m. till midnight. One can expect more customers to turn up on weekends and holidays, thus business hours are normally extended then. Sometimes, brawls and fist fights erupt among betting and drunken patrons. Other than that though, billiards is a popular sport with organized tournaments on local, national and international levels; the most prestigious of which is the World Billiard Championship.
